Fraud, scams, identity theft, and elder financial abuse are on the rise at an astronomical rate.  Most incidents are never reported.  It is estimated that 3 in 10 people have fallen victim to some type of scam and almost 100% of people encounter some type of scam on a monthly, if not weekly basis.  Millennials are 93% more likely to fall victim to certain types of scams such as fake check scams and business start up scams.  We are all targets.

American Southwest Credit Union created the Rage Against Scams program to fight back!  We teach community members what scams are, what to look out for, and how to protect themselves and their loved ones both online and in their day to day lives.  We also incorporate the signs of elder financial abuse and how to stop it.  The presentation is 1 hour + question/answer session at the end for those who want to stay.

A free Scam Prevention Packet is given out at the end of the session containing an easy reference reporting guide with contact information to the various agencies to report scams to.  The packet also contains a simplified check-list of things you can do to help protect yourself, and further reading materials from the FBI, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and the Federal Trade Commission.

Topics include:

  • Cyber-crimes, phishing schemes, scams and fraud, identity theft, title theft, and elder financial abuse
  • What causes people to fall victim to scams and why are we all vulnerable?
  • The latest scams to look out for
  • Best practices to shop on-line
  • Safe banking practices
  • Stop or greatly reduce credit card offers
  • Ways to protect your data at home
  • Ways to protect your data online including anti-spyware/malware, encryption software, & more
  • Protecting yourself against identity theft
  • Protecting your credit and how to eliminate excess mail
  • Elder Financial Abuse: Recognizing when your loved ones may need help with finances & how to protect them from criminals
  • How and where to report various scams: Different agencies work with different scams.  In all cases local law enforcement should be contacted, but there are 4-6 other agencies that should be contacted as well, depending on the type of scam and who the target is.
  • Rage Against Scams teaches “PSST.” It is impossible to know every scam our there so how can we possibly protect ourselves?  If we learn & practice PSST, we will be a lot safer.  Find out how what PSST is by coming to Rage Against Scams!
