Current Events

Hundreds of motorcycle riders and event volunteers gathered to support the annual Sheriff’s Charity Ride on November 5, 2016.  The event was organized to support two local charities this year.  $22,000 was raised and checks for $11,000 each were given to The Giving Tree Program and The Stocking Stuffer Program to support their worthy causes.  The event was held on the property of American Southwest Credit Union at 3090 E Fry Blvd.  A live DJ and vendor booths were set up to draw in partner sponsors and food for all of the activities, including raffles, a Twinkie eating contest and a bike show.  There was also a jumping castle for the kids and a fly in from the Air Evac helicopter, which landed in the parking lot and allowed guests to tour the interior.  The Sheriff’s Office and the Sheriff’s Assist Team also brought emergency response vehicles, which were open for guests as well.  Out on the highways, the motorcycle participants made their way around the county on a giant scavenger hunt – stopping at undisclosed destinations, playing games and earning more opportunities for raffle tickets and commemorative pins.  “100% of all sponsorships, ticket and raffle sales went to our two designated charities, stated Brian J. Barkdull, CEO of American Southwest Credit Union, our contribution of $7,000 ensured that all event expenses were covered so that all of the other contributions had no overhead taken out.”  Sheriff Mark Dannels also stated, “Our new partnership with ASCU for this annual event shows our increased commitment to give back to our community and support local charities that do great work in our county.”  Both the Sheriff and Barkdull agreed earlier this year that combining resources would provide greater synergy and scale to put on the event and use it for a fundraiser for local needs.  (Ret) Col John Black, Commander of the Sheriff’s Assist Team said, “Raising $22,000 for local charities is tremendous.  With this new partnership between the SAT, the Sheriff’s Office and ASCU, we can accomplish great things each year through this annual event.  We hope it continues to grow in the coming years.”
